External specialists add capacity and experience during a serious incident. Agree terms with an incident response provider before you need one. Check what your insurer requires.

Why it matters

For Incident Response, external help is rarely a purely technical question. It touches ownership, budget and how quickly decisions can be made when something goes wrong. Teams that agree on these points in advance spend less time debating them under pressure.

What to check

  • Sign a retainer with an incident response provider
  • Clarify what your MDR provider will do
  • Know your insurer’s approved responders

Where to start

Time spent on contracts during an incident is time lost. Write down what you decide, who owns it and when it will be reviewed. That record is often the evidence a reviewer asks for later.
